Easy card making idea using washi & PET tapes!

A Spooky Crafternoon! 🎃✨

Looking for a simple, fun way to make your own Halloween cards? Washi tape is one of the easiest and most versatile supplies you can use. With just a handful of tapes, some cardstock, and a little imagination, you can create unique and eye-catching cards that look like they took hours, but actually come together in minutes.

The Inspiration

Last weekend, my mum and I had a spooky little crafting session! Sometimes it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the inspiration and supplies we have, right? I’ve found that narrowing things down to just a few products can really spark creativity.

Sometimes I even challenge myself to use a single die set. Not always, of course, we want to enjoy all our lovely supplies, but simplifying can calm our crafty minds and help ideas flow.

This time, I fell in love with some of the new washi tapes that had just landed in the shop (as if I didn’t hand pick them myself, lol). It reminded me of a card I made ages ago using only washi tape, a bit of coloured paper, and a stamp. I decided to revisit that idea, but with a twist.

The Concept (and My Self Imposed Rules)

The original washi cards were already pretty cute, but I thought: why not make them into Halloween cards? With a change of colours, a fresh sentiment, or a new focal point, the design works for birthdays, Christmas, or anything else.

That’s where the Midnight Monster tape and Boogie Boo tape from The Washi Tape Shop came in. These sweet but kinda creepy monsters were just begging to be the stars of some cutesy Halloween cards, and I couldn't wait to use them.

I also couldn’t resist using Australian artist Kate Mason’s washi tapes (you might have seen her postcards in the shop too). To keep myself from going overboard, I restricted my supplies to Kate's washi designs and a couple of Halloween designs from TWTS.

The Results

This little experiment turned into a set of super fun (and super easy!) washi tape cards, and once I started, I couldn’t stop. Here are some of the tips and tricks we used:

  • Tear your washi to create irregular shapes that define your focal area.

  • If you’re using PET tape, pop the pre cut sticker onto acetate and roughly fussy cut it for dimension. (For lighter or pastel images where the form squares show through, stick them on white cardstock and trim carefully.)

  • Choose contrasting colours for your background so your ghouls and cuties really pop!

The Products

We mixed and matched a few designs! In total we only used nine tapes (plus card stock). We used Kate Mason’s Artist washi tapes to create the background. All the feature creatures came from either the Boogie Boo or Midnight Monster TWTS PET tapes. Instead of adding bling we just added final embellishments with the tiny stickers like bats, and skulls from the same sets. We did add one more halloween set of tapes just for extra sentiment type words.

Bonus Card Ideas

Creating these cards gave my crafty mojo a big confidence boost, so I kept going. (Trust me, it’s rare for me to make more than one or two cards in a sitting!) In just a few hours I had made eight cards, it was a miracle session.

I hope these ideas inspire your own spooky crafternoon. Once you start making washi tape cards, it’s very hard to stop! 👻💜

Wrap Up: DIY Halloween Fun

If you love quick and creative projects, washi tape is perfect for making handmade Halloween cards. You can keep it simple with just a few supplies, or add layers of detail for be a little extra! The best part? Every card feels unique, and the process is just as fun as the result.

Why not grab a few tapes, some card stock, and host your own spooky crafternoon?
